Scott Russell Sanders

Scott Russell Sanders, an american novelist born in 1945 in Memphis, Tennessee, is an author of many works with an environmentalist perspective. He earned his degree after attending Brown University as an undergraduate, then continued his education in graduate school at the University of Cambridge. There he earned his Ph.D. in english. He later became an english professor at Indiana University, and was a leader of his field of study. Sanders has received a multitude of awards for his writings including: Lannan Literary award, Associated Writing Programs Award in Creative Nonfiction, Great Lakes Book Award, Kenyon Review Literary Award, John Burroughs Essay Reward, Indiana Humanities Award, Mark Twain Award in 2009, Glick Indiana Authors Award in 2010, and the Cecil Woods Jr. Award in Nonfiction in 2011. Along with these awards, Sanders was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Recurring themes within his writings include: climate issues, the role of humans in nature, social justice, cultures, geography, and some spiritual writings. Many of his personal nonfiction essays as well as eco-science fiction stories highlight shifting a perspective of consumption to caretaking. Assumably, Sanders is an advocate for environmental appreciation and care.
