About Us: Text

Haley

Living in a heavily forested area of south central PA, I’ve never been one to stay cooped up in a house. I was always outside as a kid playing in the rock formations and woods that bordered our yard. As I got a little older, I ventured further, continuing my love for exploration in forests and landmarks all around and outside of PA with my family. I was the curious kid, always looking for something new. I am still a curious kid at heart, I just reflect it on my nursing studies now when I am unable to reflect it on the natural world.

Born and raised in rural northern Pennsylvania, the wilderness is something I have always been extra familiar with. As a kid I collected worms and bugs for fun, sat around campfires, played in the rain, rode horses, and so much more. As I grew older, I started to understand and take interest in the science behind the wilderness and the planet. Today, I am forced to change my way of thinking of the wilderness as fun to something that is endangered and needs saving. This leads to my interest in what human’s relationship to the planet might look like in the future.

Damian

I was born in the hills and valleys of western Pennsylvania, where I was surrounded by both nature and by the decay of industry. Among the forests and hills there were forests of a different kind, the rusting hulks of abandoned factories and lumber yards making up almost a quarter of my town's land area. I grew up often going with my dad into the soggy dense forests looking for leeks and hiking up slippery hillsides, sometimes just walking for hours down train tracks just to see where they lead me. It disheartens me that the environment is in such peril as it is now, but I hope that some sort of solution could be found before it's too late.
